Over one hundred years after it first began in the area St John Ambulance is still carrying out important work across the Cynon Valley, through its divisions in Aberdare, Hirwaun, Penderyn and Trecynon. It has the support of local people such as the Welsh television and radio presenter Roy Noble OBE, who is a trustee and member of the Priory Advisory Council, and also Lord Aberdare who is a member of the Order.
Members regularly provide first aid care for sporting, business, charity, council and a variety of other events at a local and national level, such football matches, Aberdare Carnival and Motocross events. Highly trained officers also support the NHS by carrying out Patient Transport and Emergency Medical Services. High quality training in areas such as first aid, manual handling and health & safety is an important part of the services offered by St John Ambulance Cymru Wales and is made available to business and industry.
Today the St John Ambulance Association also works in 42 different countries across five continents. This provides opportunities for members from the Cynon Valley to work and travel abroad – for example fundraising, teaching first aid in India and Zambia and educational visits to Malta and Hungary. The links with Jerusalem are thriving through the successful work of the Eye Hospital which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2007.
