Before the National Health Service was established in 1948 there was no free healthcare system – and no guarantee of medical assistance if you couldn’t afford to pay for a doctor. St John Ambulance established first aid posts, such as the one in Aberdare Park, where people could receive treatment at no cost. These activities were financed by Whist Drives and Dances, Flag Days, raffles and other fundraising events.

Medical Comfort Depots were also set up in Aberaman, Abercynon, Aberdare, Cwmaman and Hirwaun. These could provide bandages, plasters, bedpans, crutches and other equipment to those who were in need. A small fee was normally made for the loan of items, although in cases of hardship this could be waived following an application to the Committee.

When the National Health Service came to the Valleys it took over the supply of medical care and equipment to people in need. The focus of the St John Divisions became the training of miners, railwaymen, police and fire crews, as well as continuing to perform first aid duties at regular events such as the Eisteddfod and Carnival. Many local members of the St John Ambulance have gone on to train as medical and support staff for the NHS.
