Since its formation one of the ambitions of St John Ambulance’s Aberdare Division was to have a purpose built Ambulance Hall. This dream became a reality when Sir D R Llewellyn donated land to the Division in 1936. Bricks were salvaged following the demolition of two local chimneystacks and volunteers worked hard to prepare the site so that construction could commence. It took two years for the fundraising and building work to be completed and the hall was opened on 10th February 1938.

In the 1990s Dame Phyllis Harrison Roderick bequeathed money to replace the earlier hall with a larger, more substantial structure. This new building was next to the original one on Depot Road, Gadlys, Aberdare and was opened by the Duchess of Gloucester in 1997. It is still in use by the Division today.

Hirwaun Ambulance Hall opened in 1973. Under the leadership of their Superintendent Gareth Meyrick, volunteers once again played an important role in the project by preparing the land and laying foundations
