The St John Badger programme was formally launched in Wales in 1988, providing an opportunity for 5 – 10 year olds to learn essential life skills in a fun and safe environment. At weekly meetings the children can earn badges by learning about subjects such as first aid, the environment, communication, caring and safety.
Badgers have a black and white uniform that may be worn at meetings and public events, now similar in style to the type for adult members. They also have their own mascot called ‘Bertie Badger’ who guides children through activities.
The Badgers group in Aberdare has been immensely successful. Frequently over-subscribed, its members have entered and won many competitions and awards including the Super Badger Award, which is the highest prize available to Badger members. But it’s not all hard work – children are encouraged to develop social skills, enjoy themselves and take part in special events such as parties and trips.
