Over eighty years many presses were established in the town. There were however two phases of extraordinary activity, 1854 – 1865 and 1903 – 1911 when a new press was established in the town on average every two years.

The material produced covered two distinct though often overlapping subjects. Newspapers and journals on the one side and religious publications on the other. Most of the works produced were in Welsh and were aimed at a national audience. Towards the turn of the twentieth century however, at a time when the Welsh language was in decline English began to be used for political publications.

The history of printing in Aberdare would mirror that of the Welsh language. When the language started to decline so did Aberdare’s printing of material for a national audience. By the 1930’s when Welsh was no longer the dominant language in the valleys, the presses were producing material purely for a local market.
