Return | Yn Ôl Rhodri Jones was born in Sling, Gwynedd of a welsh father and a mother from Luxemburg. He left Wales in 1982 travelling widely in Europe, South America and East Africa. Rhodri eventually began working as a professional photographer in 1989 whilst in Central America and has worked on photographic projects around the globe. Many leading newspapers, Non Governmental Organisations, magazines and publishers worldwide, have used his work. Rhodri is currently based in Italy where his work regularly features in Italy’s leading newspaper Corriere della Sera. For his latest project the analytical artistic eye that Rhodri has brought to his portrayal of other nations and peoples has now been turned on his homeland. Return / Yn Ôl’ forms a unique document, a poignant but uplifting reflection on contemporary life in Wales from a Welshman who has spent most of his life away from his spiritual home. It is also a personal and intimate meditation on the theme of ‘Hiraeth’ - longing for one’s place of origin. Rhodri uses the camera lens to make real his feelings on returning to Wales to work, creating poetic visual hymns to the land of his birth. Through the images within the exhibition we see the familiar and the mundane with fresh eyes. With these striking large format black and white images Rhodri has created a majestic and moving paean to the nation of his birth.
