Reflection Both artists were born in Swansea in 1943 and became friends while studying painting in Swansea College of Art in the 1960’s. Working in parallel since then they have supported and encouraged each other to develop their own individual ways of expression, Elizabeth having focussed on the figure and Carolyn on the inanimate. While both have exhibited widely in the United Kingdom ‘Reflection’ is their first exhibition together. ‘When I am painting the figure in front
of very large mirrors, the refection is impossible to ignore and
plays a vital part in the composition of the picture. I am drawn
towards the reflected image, which offers opportunities for me to
consider the nature of the real’. ‘My chief interest is in the intensity of
the colour and its impact both visually and emotionally. Essentially
my work is not based upon any literal vision or intention. It is
a reflection of what might be rather than what is’
