The Art Of Botanical Painting
Beth Phillip

Beth Phillip was born in Aberdare and attended Aberdare Girls Grammar School from 1953 to 1960. She acquired a Special Honours Degree in Botany at London University and a Diploma in Education at Bristol University. She pursued a career teaching the biological sciences and in 1969 her reference monograph “The Bacteria” was published. Before moving to the United States in 1989 she was Head of Careers Counselling at the British School of Brussels, Belgium. Volunteer work with the Brandywine Conservancy in Pennsylvania provided the opportunity to familiarize herself with native plants and to illustrate a manual for the identification of wildflower seeds. Beth and her husband returned to the United Kingdom in 2004 and reside in Kemerton, Gloucestershire.

Exhibitions
While in the United States Beth had several solo exhibitions of her paintings, including those at The Missouri Botanical Garden, St Louis and The Kansas City Botanical Garden.

Awards
Beth was awarded a Gold Medal in 2008 by the Royal Horticultural Society for her paintings and comparative study of the trapping mechanisms of the Sarraceniaceae. In the same year she received a Diploma in Botanical Painting with distinction from The English Gardening School at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London. Also in 2008, on the basis of a series of fifteen paintings submitted over three years, Beth was accepted as a member of The Society of Botanical Artists and was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit by the Lindley Library at the S.B.A. Annual Exhibition, Westminster, London. Her work hangs in several corporate and private collections. Beth has been a freelance artist for Hallmark cards since 1995.
