Mae’r awdur a’r adolygydd celf Hugh Adams yn disgrifio Garner, yn ei lyfr ‘Imaging Wales’, yn un o’r artistiaid prin hynny sy’n “wleidyddol ddiamwys”. Yn ôl Adams, “Gan fanteisio ar y ffaith fod ei gefndir yn y De diwydiannol (cafodd ei eni yng Nglynebwy), mae e’n defnyddio gwrthrychau sy wedi’u hachub a’u prynu fel ei gilydd i adlewyrchu'r gymdeithas a’i sefydliadau. Yn ogystal ag ymwrthod ag agweddau mwyaf affwysol diwylliant prynu cymdeithas, mae gwaith David Garner yn ymdrin â chreithiau Cymreig hynod, canlyniad ymelwa trwy organebau cymdeithasol a phrosesau diwydiannol dim ond y diniwed ein plith sy heb eu llinach yn y Gymru fodern.”

In a climate of insecurity and tension it is imperative to expose the certainties and reach understanding. ‘Whatever they say I am, that’s what I’m not’ – is an attempt to understand this realisation and encourage debate."
